In the beginning...
I got into running because I wanted to improve my stamina for football. Over the past couple of years, I’ve slowly distanced myself from football and I’ve slowly grown closer to running.
I fell in love with it in 2020: on a critical run, at an unsuspecting moment, I fell in love. I want more moments and more memories and more growth. I want more!
Joining the club...
In 2023, during my training for a marathon, I came to an epiphany mid-run: ‘I’m all alone’. This was just after the mid point of a (seemingly) never ending run. This was in Hampton Court Park, where there’s not much for company. This was a turning point for me.
I tried out Sheen Shufflers on a whim: they were the closest running club to me. On my first session, everyone made an effort to speak to me. I’ve never been somewhere like that before: somewhere where everyone is so welcoming.
Good times...
I’ve really enjoyed the Wednesday training sessions this year. They can be difficult at times, but the feeling of accomplishment after a hard workout is hard to beat. There was one session where we did intervals near the Royal Ballet School. We were ensnared in darkness, but it didn’t feel that way. It felt fun; I felt free.
Getting it done...
I like my Sheen Shufflers vest that I got from cross country. I want to start wearing it more when I commit to weekly parkrun in the New Year.
My dream...
I want to become good enough at running that people approach me to coach them. Mind you, I don’t want to do it for money - 'This is about running. This is also not about running.'
